Figgers Foundation Awards $5,000 Scholarship at HANDY’s 20th Annual Scholarship Breakfast

Pompano Beach, Florida — The Figgers Foundation brought its Florida Connect initiative to Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Pompano Beach, supporting a community food drive while helping expand access to technology for local residents.

Located at 800 NW 8th Avenue, Mount Calvary is one of Pompano Beach's historic churches. Established in 1902, the church has served the community for more than a century, building a longstanding tradition of faith, fellowship, and community service.

The outreach was conducted in partnership with Pastor Brandon Jones, continuing the church's commitment to serving local residents.

Supporting a Community Food Drive Through Digital Access

Mount Calvary Baptist Church organized a community food drive on Tuesday, bringing residents together to receive food and support. The Figgers Foundation participated in the effort through Florida Connect, distributing tablets to community members during the food drive.

The Foundation returned to Mount Calvary on Sunday for a second tablet distribution, providing additional residents with access to technology through the Florida Connect program.

Together, the two distributions helped extend the impact of the church's community outreach while addressing another important need: access to digital technology.

Bringing Technology to the Community

The area surrounding Mount Calvary reflects the diversity and economic challenges found in parts of Pompano Beach. ZIP Code 33060 is home to approximately 37,000 residents, with a median household income of about $65,000 and nearly 18% of residents living below the poverty line. The community is also diverse, with significant Black and Hispanic populations.

For residents facing financial or other barriers to technology, access to a reliable device can make a meaningful difference. A tablet can help people communicate with family, access healthcare and essential services, search for employment, learn online, and stay connected to important information.

Through Florida Connect, the Figgers Foundation works to reduce these barriers by providing qualifying residents with access to technology and connectivity.

Continuing a Legacy of Community Service

The partnership with Mount Calvary is particularly meaningful because of the church's long history of serving the Pompano Beach community. By participating in the church's food drive and returning for a second tablet distribution, the Figgers Foundation helped extend that spirit of service into the area of digital inclusion.

The event footage captures community members receiving tablets, interacting with the Foundation team, and taking part in an effort focused on connection and opportunity.

The tablet distributions on Tuesday and Sunday demonstrate how community partnerships can address both immediate needs and longer-term opportunities. While the church's food drive provided essential support to local families and residents, Florida Connect helped provide technology that can support communication, education, healthcare access, employment, and everyday digital needs.

Through Florida Connect and partnerships with organizations such as Mount Calvary Baptist Church, the Figgers Foundation continues to expand digital access and help more Floridians connect, learn, communicate, and participate in an increasingly digital world.

The Figgers Foundation was honored to sponsor and attend the 20th Annual Scholarship Breakfast hosted by HANDY (Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth), an organization committed to empowering youth through education, opportunity, and consistent support.

The event celebrated young people who continue to rise above their circumstances, striving for a better and brighter future. It brought together partners, mentors, and supporters from across the community in a moving tribute to resilience, determination, and the power of collective care.

During the celebration, the Figgers Foundation proudly presented a $5,000 scholarship to Mia, a remarkable student who will soon begin her college journey at Bethune-Cookman University, where she plans to major in education. Mia’s dedication to learning and her goal of becoming a teacher reflect the values we hold close — creating pathways for success and giving back to the community.

This scholarship was given in memory of Mia’s late father, a proud HANDY alumnus. The presentation carried deep meaning for both Mia and those who knew her father, symbolizing not only the continuation of a legacy but also the strength found in community support and shared purpose.

At the Figgers Foundation, we are committed to investing in the next generation by supporting students like Mia who are driven to make a difference. Through our educational initiatives and outreach programs, we work to create opportunities that help youth build strong, healthy futures.

We are incredibly proud of Mia and grateful to have been part of this inspiring event. Her journey is just beginning, and we look forward to seeing all she will achieve as she steps into this new chapter.
